Earthquake waves

I was slacking a little bit last week, so here is a quick recap:

We used a Slinky in class to model the 2 types of earthquake waves: P and S waves. The purpose of Thursday's lab was to show how each wave moves and the speed of each. On Friday, we discussed our findings and took notes on body and surface waves.

Keep these things in mind:

We discussed our findings on earthquake waves:
  • P-waves (Primary waves)
    • are the fastest
    • first to travel during a quake and
    •  push and pull through the earth
  • S-waves (Secondary waves)
    • come after the p-waves
    •  move side to side through the earth
  • Surface waves arrive last and cause the most destruction
There will be a quiz on Wednesday, October 3 on waves and vocab. Study ISN pages 14, 15, 17, 18, and 19. A copy of pg 14 can be found under Homework on my website.

**BONUS** Can you tell me what name(s) seismologists call surface waves? If so, bring your answer into class on Tuesday!
